Stress-Reliever FAQs about Summer Camps for Teens (Pt.1)
First-time campers usually get nervous. Yet summer camps can become a daunting experience for parents as well.
If you’re sending your child to summer camp, here are some answers that will guide you during the sign-up process:
How do I choose a summer camp, and how safe are they?
Safety is paramount when sending your child to a summer camp. That is why we continuously test and improve our indoor and outdoor security systems to ensure that kids are safe.
We evaluate every emergency exit, protection equipment, infrastructure, and activities protocol. There isn’t a single paintball ball left behind in our security checks.
However, we need to be realistic. According to the American Camping Association, almost 80% of campers report being homesick for at least one day when they go to any summer camp. However, less than 1 out of 10 cases are severe.
Our camp policies regarding nonprescription medications are that, if children do bring these, they must be handed over and taken under supervision. Transparency is key. We recommend the camper inform the guides if he packed any allergy medication, pain relievers, or vitamins.
Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, please read our blog about our protocols.
What things can my child do in a summer camp?
We make sure the camp offers the perfect balance between structured activities and free time to ensure a tech detox to the kids.
We have more than 30 air, on-land & water activities. Water skiing, wakeboarding, canoeing, tubing, paddle boarding, high ropes, choreography, and paintball. Your kid will love archery, arts & crafts, disco nights, and more!
We offer Day Camp programs: daily adrenaline-filled activities. Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm, for campers from 4 to 12 years old. You can book as many weeks as you want. We have 3 locations in Florida: Oleta River Park in North Miami, Historic Virginia Key Beach Park in Miami, and Treetops Park in Davie.
We also have a Sleepaway Camp for boys and girls ages 6 to 16. The camp is in Fruitland Park, FL, 1-hour drive from Orlando. The 1st season is three weeks long; it starts on July 2nd, and the 2nd season starts on July 23rd.
Do campers receive enough supervision?
Kids are supervised by qualified counselors, staff members, and volunteers at summer camps.
We require our Guaikinima family to embrace leadership skills and a passion for working with children and teens (of all ages). We want nothing more than for everybody on campus to build lifetime memories of me at camp.
Camp counselors are trained professionals responsible for campers’ safety and well-being while they’re in their care. They work in shifts according to the needs of each day’s activities and based on their skills.
Our staff members receive training to handle emergencies in our day camp or sleepaway programs. We embrace specific values to gather the best talent in critical areas for every summer camping season in our three locations.
We have a ratio of 2 counselors per 12 kids in both day and sleepaway programs.
Overnight or Day camps? What is the best option for my children?
If you want your child to get the most out of their summer camp experience, it’s best if they spend more than just the afternoon here. Overnight camps offer more activities than day camps and allow kids to bond with other children in their age group.
Most experts recommend sending children at least 7-8 years old to benefit fully from summer camps.
If your child is aged 5-6, consider sending them to a day camp where they can get used to being away from home before moving on to overnight options later.
